i meant to post about this delightful retreat on the LES but completely forgot until i saw that the nytimes beat me to it in their “big candy apple” piece recently. after a rather bland msf info session last thursday, S decided that cupcakes would be the thing to do to round off our evening and surely – when are cupcakes ever not the perfect way to spend an evening with a friend? we decided to try sss which i originally had noted when i used to frequent the les and which we had wanted to try once before but it had been closed by the time we got there. so we jumped on the F to delancey-essex and arrived in the heavenly aroma of fresh-baked cupcakes.
now the selection of cupcakes was nothing original, but the “ooey gooey” chocolate cupcake with chocolate-almond buttercream and lemon cupcake that we split were solidly delicious. moister in cake than magnolia’s (our one and often-shared complaint), they were happily consumed with a cup of steamed milk. the atmosphere is delightfully authentic, homemade and not at all trendy/hip/manhattan, and the cupcakes only $1.50 each. i believe the nytimes also raved about some of their non-cupcake items, but a review on that will have to wait until my next trip to sss. go, take a friend, enjoy life.
