cafe mozart

w 70th st btwn b’way & amsterdam

after my late-ish pcr setup (which turned out to be pointless…d’oh) and C’s pseudo-recovery from his cold symptoms, we met up on the west side near him for dessert (and a late dinner for him). alice’s tea cup was closed, and he found this place instead, right near the loews on b’way. overall, it struck me as generic UWS cafe/restaurant. very much like the “famous” one i went to with N & J last summer when N was in town — i don’t remember what it was famous for, but it was the same rather extensive anything-you-could-want dessert menu ($6+), $4 cappucinos, and generic dessert tastes. nothing bad, but nothing great and pricey. C ordered dinner food as well, and seemed to really like that, on the other hand. (i only tried the pommes frites, which were good) three interesting perks of this place, however: 1) live piano music, 2) 50% bottles of wine that night (we missed out on it), 3) interesting birthday celebration rituals (involving…you guessed it, a mozart wig).

i wouldn’t go here as a destination. however, if you’re in this neighborhood, which thus far seems rather sparse on good cafes to me, cafe mozart is certainly a place that is a) open rather late (2ish) and b) better than that europan across from lincoln center.
