401 ave of the americas (6th ave), b/t waverly place & w. 8th/greenwich ave
for a week, during tfa training that summer of ‘05, i saw gobo every morning and evening on my way in and out of the w. 4th stop. i remember being intrigued by this upscale organic/vegetarian restaurant: somewhere between more hippie-ish angelica’s kitchen and trying-to-be-haute-cuisine counter. but it got a mediocre/poor review from C., and so it kind of left my mind. but for A’s birthday back in April, S suggested gobo as a good place for a birthday dinner, seeing as how A is vegetarian and her petit ami francais had brought her there for a dinner that was much enjoyed.
Its modern, “organic” decor and atmosphere fits in with the theme of the restaurant. The rose I had wasn’t great, but the food was surprisingly good. A little overpriced for vegetarian, but actually quite reasonable by Manhattan standards, and fine for a nice veggie dinner. S & i split some dumplings that were quite good (especially considering that they were veggie) and a cellophane noodle stir-fry that was delicious! I can’t remember any more the exact dish names, but I’m going to overrule C’s original comment to me about Gobo and give it my veggie recommendation.
