if i had thought ahead of time to make more nuanced variants of “recommended,” banh mi saigon bakery would have been in the “highly recommended”, “most delicious food”, and “best bargain” categories. my sister was totally right when she said, “it’s 25 cents more, but it’s worth it.”
compared to the banh mi so and the other banh mi place, the extra 25 cents (for a whopping total of $3.25 a sandwich) goes toward a) more flavorful roast pork and b) a better marinated and assembled assortment of julienned vegetables. (unfortunately, the somewhat mediocre french roll remains the same. but for $3.25 you could even afford to drop by le pain quotidien and swap the bread for something else.)
i can’t really describe how good this ridiculously cheap sandwich is. you’ll just have to go and try it yourself (but beware, they close around 7/7:30 and sometimes run out of roast pork at the end of the day. call ahead and they’ll save you one.)

next to the soy lady in chinatown (grand near broome? maybe?)
i didn’t actually go to this place myself. nor is it called “banh mi place #2″. but this was the second place chich & aaron tried. they brought me a sandwich at housingworks. it was DELICIOUS. i thought the roast pork part was better than at bahn mi so, and fit in better with the vietnamese salami inside. mmmm. also $3. the woman didn’t speak english, though, so they ended up with 2 sandwiches, not three. still delicious! again, though, not recommended because #3 is supposed to be better. but i haven’t been there yet personally – will post after i do.

broome st btwn mott & elizabeth (i think)
this is the original bahn mi place that chich and aaron discovered and loved. we went there last weekend and had a mid-afternoon lunch/dinner. it was tasty!! and only $3. i would recommend it except they’ve found an even BETTER bahn mi place (but 25 cents more expensive…the horrors!)

My inauguration. Did we decide I can post here or not?
Bahn mi stop #1
Location: Yucatasia, Mission District, SF. They serve Yucatan food with a side of Vietnamese sandwiches. Yes, really.
Purchase: Pork Bahn Mi, $3
Verdict: Good but not as good as the other one, at that place whose name I can’t remember.
Next time: Peip we’ll go for the Yucatan half next time you’re in town. It looked really good but the menu is all in Spanish!
